The Scandi Granny's Kitchen

My Grandmother passed away exactly a week ago. She was very proud of our Norwegian heritage and immersed herself in it in many ways. One of the most apparent and cherished ways she did so was through her traditional Norwegian/Scandinavian cooking (though she was an amazing cook no matter what she was "fixing"). I am very fortunate that when my aunts were clearing out Grandma's apartment, they thought to save me a binder in which Grandma had compiled many traditional Norwegian/Scandinavian recipes. Some I have tried (well, Grandma's version anyway), some I have not but am looking forward to testing!

It has occured to me to wonder who will carry on these traditional recipes we enjoyed mainly at the holidays, as risengrynsgrøt (rice porridge), søtsuppe (fruit soup) and lefse (soft flatbread) are being replaced with bean dip,  Chex® Mix and tortilla roll-ups. Not that I don't love a good bean dip as much as the next person, but there's room for both old and new at our table, and I hope to keep enjoying many of these traditional dishes with my family for years to come!
